Wondering how to make those fancy horizontal braids you see on knitting sweaters, hats and cowls? Let’s take the mystery out of the process and learn how to do 2-color Latvian Braids as well as one-color horizontal braids (Vikkel). A lesson on Cori’s 2-color cast-on is also included in this hands-on skill-building class where participants will start the Choose Your Own Path Hat pattern as well as the Easiest Cabled Hat Ever. A lesson in corrugated ribbing can be included.
Students should bring 1 color of "lighter" worsted-weight wool that contrasts well with your first homework cast-on color (one dark and one light works best for this hat); 2 contrasting colors (one lighter and one darker) of worsted-weight yarn (small amounts work fine for learning Cori’s 2 Color Cast on, but if you’d like to work up a hat out of this cast-on learned in class, then you will need approximately 50 g of each color). Note: To complete the hats (which will not happen in class), you will need a total of approximately 125 yards of worsted-weight yarn or about 60 grams total if you achieve gauge. (,So about 30 grams of each color for homework #2 will suffice.) Feel free to use leftovers if you have them. Optional: If you prefer not to do both pieces of homework, you can rip out your Vikkel braid once learned during class and then use the same piece to learn the Latvian Braid. You do receive the patterns for both hats, so why not knit them up.
