Students will knit a small yarn bowl while practicing modular joining. This design joins live stitches to slipped stitch selvedge stitches in a garter stitch piece. Simple increases are used to shape the final piece. Directions are provided for DK weight yarn, but the concepts can be easily adapted for other weights of yarn. The in-class project is a mini yarn bowl cozy; pattern includes directions for a larger design suited for a standard 100 g skein. We will work the pattern as written for the first 2 hours of the class and then take questions and spend time exploring ‘what ifs’ for the final hour.
Students should bring 50 g of DK weight yarn in 2+ colors OR fingering weight yarn (to hold doubled), 2 pair of knitting needles with 32” / 80 cm cord or longer (choose a size to achieve approx. 22 st over 4” / 10 cm– suggested size US 2-4 / 2.75-3.5 mm), smooth waste yarn in contrast color, crochet hook in similar size for provisional cast-on, 10+ light bulb stitch markers (preferably in different colors or different styles), scissors, tapestry needle, tape measure or ruler, pencil(s) or preferred note-taking device, tubing, waste yarn, and stitch holder to hold live stitches. Optional: Interchangeable cords for needles and gram scale to weigh yarn.
